Interceptive orthodontics (8-12 years)

This is treatment carried out at an early age to prevent later complications or decrease the severity of later problems.  It is recommended that children have an orthodontic examination at the age of 7-10 to help to determine whether they may require braces in the future.  As children are still growing at that age, some problems are much easier to treat at this stage, as the jaw structure is easier to mould.

Treatment includes:

The expansion of the jaws to make room for teeth.

Directing growth of the jaws.

Guiding the eruption of the adult teeth.

Correction of deep bites.

Maintaining spaces to allow room for the adult teeth to take up their correct positions.

Pushing top teeth over the bite with removable braces.

Correction of sucking habits

Treatment sometimes requires a removable brace. These can be from clear, to the most colourful, to glittery to make them more fun. They can also have special pictures placed in them.

An early consultation is recommended for the following patients:

Children who have lost baby teeth at an early age (before 8 years old)

Children who DON’T have spaces between their baby teeth.  Ironically, although this may look pretty and attractive, children without spaces between their baby teeth are likely to suffer from crowding later when their adult teeth appear.

By age 13 (+/-  6 months) (see dates for tooth eruption), all adult teeth (except the wisdom teeth) should have appeared.  If baby teeth are still present or if adult teeth are missing, it may well be a sign of an underlying problem.  Remember – we offer free consultations so we can advise you if your child will need orthodontic treatment or give you peace of mind that their teeth are naturally developing correctly.
