Avoiding Unsafe Orthodontics

Safe orthodontics means that treatment should by done by a qualified specialist.  Specialist training requires that a dentist undertake at least a further 2 years of formal postgraduate training. Don’t be afraid to ask!  Otherwise you could be putting you or your child at risk of unsafe treatment and practices.

Things can go very wrong if you’re not in the hands of an expert.  It’s vital that patients receive the correct treatment program from the outset.  Previous inappropriate treatment can sometimes be rectified, but why take the chance with your health or that of your child?  It is naturally best that treatment be entrusted to someone specially trained to cope with every eventuality or problem that may arise during the course of your treatment.

Recycling – some orthodontists re-use materials (wires, brackets or bands) that have already been in someone else’s mouth to save money!  Be sure to ask your orthodontist about their practice.  It is your right to be fully informed of this.  At our practice, you can rest assured that no materials are ever “recycled” under any circumstance.

If someone calls themselves an orthodontist, you might want to ask the following questions:

At which university, in which country did you receive your orthodontic training

How long did your orthodontic training course last?

Remember, specialist orthodontic training requires at least 2 years.  “Crash courses” or short courses and seminars for dentists does not qualify them as a specialist orthodontist.  In the same way that a doctor must specialise and train to be a gynaecologist, so too for orthodontists.

Did you receive a degree for your orthodontic training?

Orthodontists trained in the United States usually receive a Certificate and Masters in Orthodontics.  In the United Kingdom, trained orthodontists also receive a Masters of Science in Orthodontics.

Are you a member of any orthodontic societies?

The World Federation of Orthodontics (WFO) only grants membership to those who have completed accredited courses.  The American Association of Orthodontists admits only those who have been trained in the US or those who are members of the WFO.

Remember, it is your right to ask. Any qualified orthodontist would be proud to display degrees and memberships!
