| | Advice
to parents
Orthodontic treatment is an
investment in your child’s future dental health and confidence. Although teeth can be moved at any age, most problems are
easier to treat at a younger age.
Tooth movements and the ability to control growth of the jaws is best
when the
face is developing. The benefits of orthodontics to a
child are numerous. Consider the following -
 |
Better dental health
- straighter teeth are simply healthier and easier to clean. |
 |
Avoidance of
being teased by other children. |
 |
Gaining a greater
sense of self-confidence and
attractiveness. |
 |
Greater social adjustment as adults. |
 |
Greater acceptance by others. |
Once you’ve decided to proceed with
treatment, parental and family support is needed because:
 |
Children may feel self-conscious
at first until they get used to their new braces.
It helps to remind children of the benefits of their treatment and
how common it is for teenagers to wear braces today, especially in
developed countries. Giving children access to the internet and information and
pictures of braces can help them to understand that braces worldwide are
now a cool fashion accessory. On overseas trips, many kids comment on the
number of other kids they notice wearing braces. |
 |
Some children need to be reminded
to brush their teeth regularly. Poor
brushing can lead to decay or damage to teeth at any time, but especially
when wearing braces.
|
 |
Sometimes, parts of the brace can
get broken. Please be on the
look-out for this – if the brace isn’t intact, it may not be working
properly. If
the brace is damaged feel free to contact us to
arrange an appointment. Remember, don't panic - not all damage
is an emergency, but it doesn't hurt to let us have a look. |
And remember, before deciding to
start treatment, check that your practitioner IS a fully-qualified orthodontic
specialist. (See Avoiding unsafe orthodontics)
